The Silent Struggle of High-Functioning Depression

Some people living with major depressive disorder may not realize they’re experiencing symptoms, especially when they appear to function well in social settings or at work. Outwardly, they might seem cheerful and engaged, while privately coping with persistent feelings of sadness, low self-worth, anxiety, or emotional exhaustion. This experience is sometimes referred to as “smiling depression” or high-functioning depression, where symptoms are often misunderstood or attributed to stress or personal challenges.
