A Drink After Work: When Should You Check In?

An occasional drink after work may feel like a way to “just unwind” or “take the edge off.” But when should you become concerned?

Pay attention when wanting a drink becomes missing it and, eventually, noticing its absence when you do not have it. This does not necessarily mean you are experiencing withdrawal, but your nervous system may be becoming accustomed to the effects of alcohol. This process is called nervous system adaptation and may contribute to increased tolerance.

Early intervention can help prevent the progression of a problem that may become more difficult to address over time. A confidential EAP consultation can help you better understand your drinking patterns, explore your concerns without judgment, and identify appropriate next steps.
