Application Process

Your Application

MD/PhD applicants submit their application and all additional required documentation through AMCAS. The AMCAS application opens in the beginning of May and closes October 15th  preceding the year of expected entry (Secondary Applications due November 15th, Letters of Recommendations due November 22nd).  If you are interested in Rochester, it is recommended that you apply early due to rolling admissions. MD/PhD applicants are required to fulfill all prerequisite requirements of the URSMD, including coursework, MCAT exam, and undergraduate degree accreditation. In addition, due to the nature of our MSTP funding, all MD/PhD applicants must hold US Citizenship or Permanent Residency status. Deadlines for application components, interviews and decisions are consistent with our medical school.

The Interview

Year to year, we receive approximately 300 applications, and extend 75–90 interview invitations with the goal of matriculating approximately 8 students per class. Applicants invited to interview will receive all instructions for scheduling their interview with the invitation. MSTP interviews take place over the course of two days (varied times), as well as optional, additional social and informational sessions. All invited applicants will interview with two medical school interviewers, the Program Director and/or Associate Director, an MSTP Admissions Committee member, an MSTP student, and 3-5 research faculty in areas indicated by the interviewee. In addition, each MSTP applicant will also participate in group informational and interactive sessions with staff, faculty and students. This will include a virtual tour of the School of Medicine, so you can "see" what it may be like to be in the SMD on a day-to-day basis, as well as a case discussion. Interviews run September through January. MSTP applicants are also encouraged to attend any open house visits that are scheduled through Medical School Admissions.

Acceptance

Admission decisions are determined after review by the SMD and MSTP admissions committees. Decisions are made on a rolling basis by 6–8 weeks following each interview session. Accepted students will be notified by a personal phone call from the Director and will receive materials by e-mail and traditional mail, including an invitation to Revisit Weekend*.

Revisit Weekend

Applicants accepted to the MSTP are typically invited to return to Rochester in the spring to visit the Program. This opportunity allows the prospective student to review the Program, meet with additional research faculty, and further explore the Medical Center and the city. Hotel accommodations, meals, and transportation to and around Rochester are all covered by the MD/PhD Program.
