In partnership with Butterfly, UR Health Lab members have developed MSK VUE, the first academic education app in the Butterfly AI Marketplace. MSK VUE is a musculoskeletal ultrasound training application powered by automated artificial intelligence, designed to enable clinicians to efficiently identify key peripheral anatomy structures, including nerves, tendons, and bones, through interactive ultrasound imaging. It’s intended for educational use and is provided free of charge.
The MSK VUE app, available through the Butterfly Garden, is a clinician training platform developed by UR Health Lab members in collaboration with Butterfly Network. Designed specifically to help healthcare providers learn to identify carpal tunnel syndrome on ultrasound, MSK VUE employs AI and machine learning to detect median nerve swelling—quantified via cross-sectional area at the elbow helping to predict developing carpal tunnel. This allows clinicians to accelerate diagnosis and initiate treatment far sooner than traditional pathways. In the past, patients often waited days or weeks for MRI or nerve conduction studies, which are time-consuming and scheduled in the future. MSK VUE changes that dynamic by enabling point-of-care recognition of nerve abnormalities in real time.
At the heart of this effort is the University of Rochester Medical Center’s unmatched leadership in POCUS deployment: URMC has distributed more Butterfly handheld ultrasound devices than any other US academic medical center, having deployed 862 devices across 64 departments integrated with Compas™, with plans to expand to 2,500 by 2026.
UR Health Lab developers Dave Mitten, Constantinos Ketonis, and Justin Zelenka, led the creation of MSK VUE, with assistance from Ajay Anand, Lisa Pink, and Cristiano Tapparello. In partnership with Butterfly, this training app is now offered free of charge via the Butterfly Garden. The app exemplifies UR Health Lab’s mission: harnessing ultrasound, AI, and clinical collaboration to build biomarkers that streamline diagnosis, enhance access, and support faster, smarter patient care.
