Jones Memorial Hospital Gets New MRI

On September 12, Jones Memorial closed down the medical parking lot to welcome a new GE MRI machine. The 14 ton magnet was hoisted into the building using a specialized forklift and will be located in the new MRI tower within the expansion at Jones Memorial Hospital.

Says Jen Frungillo, director of Medical Imaging, “This new equipment will expand medical imaging access by decreasing scan times.” She went on to say, “The new scanner cuts scan times on some tests by up to half. For patients who were unable to sit for the long MRI scans in the older machines, this is a huge opportunity to increase access.” Frungillo added that the tunnel is also larger for greater accessibility.

The new MRI tower adds an MRI registration area, holding area, and changing rooms in addition to the new technology. Says Jim Helms, CEO, “The new MRI tower greatly improves the patient experience. We’re excited to be able to expand our medical imaging services in the region and hope to continue to expand patient access to high quality care through advanced medical imaging in our local communities.”

The new machine is expected to be available to the public by late- November. For more information on medical imaging services available at Jones Memorial Hospital, please call 585-596-4013 or visit jones.urmc.edu.
