Department of Psychiatry’s 75th Anniversary
Celebrate with Us!
Our 75th celebrations and activities will be an opportunity to come together as faculty, staff, trainees, alumni, department partners, supporters, and community.
We will celebrate past accomplishments, reflect on missed opportunities, and imagine what is possible for the department’s next 25 years.
How Are We Connected? Join Our Network Project!
Our social networks influence our well-being in multiple ways (see work of our own Peter Wyman, PhD, using social networks for suicide prevention). Extrapolating on this work, please join other alumni, faculty, and staff for a first-of-its-kind departmental social network project! Take our brief survey and identify folks who have shaped your career. We will use this information to construct visualizations of our departmental network, which will be shown at our 75th Anniversary celebration in September 2022.

Throughout 2022 we will come together via zoom for meaningful discussions regarding biopsychosocial innovations and provide a glimpse into our Diversity, Inclusion, Culture and Equity brown bag series, and the Bridge Art Gallery. Join a Zoom webinar event to celebrate our anniversary throughout the year.
75th Anniversary Webinar Series | The Past, Present & Future of Biopsychosocial Education, Care, Research and Community Partnership.
How the World Changed UR Psychiatry and UR Psychiatry Changed the World
Developed by George Engel in the early days of our department, the biopsychosocial model has grown to be an internationally recognized approach to understanding health and illness and as a guide to proper diagnosis and care of patients. The biopsychosocial model was born in an era when psychopharmacology was in its infancy, and when psychoanalysis was in the ascendancy. Yet it somehow retains its relevance. It has also been a framework to guide our development of excellence in each of the department’s missions over many decades.
This 75th Anniversary Webinar Series will examine our history and attempt to understand the staying power of this approach which remains the cornerstone of our practice. It will highlight the many ways in which UR Psychiatry has been an innovator in clinical care, education, research, and relationships with the communities in which we live and work.
In 2013, the Department of Psychiatry began its Summer Brown Bag Series presenting topics focused on all facets of inequity during 8-weekly summer sessions. This series, now in partnership with other URMC Departments, continues to this day.
This year's Office of Diversity, Inclusion, Culture & Equity (DICE) Summer Brown Bag series will be part of the 75th Anniversary's virtual events and include topics relating to the history and future of our department and the URMC.
The 26th World Congress of the International Congress of Psychosomatic Medicine, 75th Anniversary Events and the University of Rochester Alumni events will be held in Rochester in September of 2022.
