Gloria M. Culver

At the University of Rochester, Dr. Gloria M. Culver is dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, leading 18 departments and 12 programs that cover arts and humanities, social sciences, and natural and physical sciences. Additionally, she serves as professor in the departments of biology and of biochemistry and biophysics. Before joining University of Rochester faculty in 2007, she served as assistant and associate professor in the department of biochemistry, biophysics, and molecular biology at Iowa State University.

Culver earned a bachelor of arts in biology and minor in art history from Ithaca College. She received a master of science and doctorate in biochemistry at the University of Rochester. At the University, Culver’s research centers on the assembly of ribosomal machinery essential for growth of all cells. She has greatly contributed to understanding how bacterial infections may be controlled through selective inhibition of specific control points of ribosomal assembly. Her research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for 20 consecutive years, as well as from the American Cancer Society and the National Science Foundation.

Throughout her career, Culver has co-authored over 45 peer-reviewed publications and has served as reviewer of many journals including the Journal of Molecular Biology, Nature Structure and Molecular Biology, and EMBO Journal. Culver has served on and chaired NIH study sections for grant reviews. She is a member of the RNA Society and Biophysical Society, and serves on the Memorial Art Gallery and Geva Theatre boards.
