Research Guidelines
All new investigators are expected to review the Department Research Guidelines. This document includes detailed information on the resources available to faculty and trainees conducting research. This document also describes the process for developing and submitting new research protocols and grants, as well as information on internal grants and the Resident Research Training Track.
Research Design and Statistical Consulting
Laurent Glance, MD is the Vice-Chair of Research, and will meet with faculty and their resident/fellow mentees to discuss research design, statistical analysis, and protocol development.
Dr. Changyong Feng, from the Department of Biostatistics and Computational Biology, is available to provide quantitative and qualitative assistance on research projects. This includes providing assistance with research design, power analysis, and statistical analysis.
Drs. Robert Dworkin and Jennifer Gewandter are available to provide guidance on the design, conduct, analyses, interpretation, and dissemination of randomized clinical trials conducted in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine.
Shan Gao, MS, is a data scientist, works closely with Dr. Feng to assist Department faculty on data analysis.
IRB Protocol Preparation
Raymond A. Zollo, M.D. serves as Vice-Chair of the University of Rochester IRB. Dr. Zollo is the research advisor on IRB matters to faculty and residents within the Department of Anesthesiology. He facilitates the review process for proposals submitted by members of the Anesthesia Department to the IRB.
Janet Pennella-Vaughan, MS,NP serves as the Director of the Anesthesiology Clinical Research Center. Ms Vaugan assists faculty and their mentees with the development of research protocols and protocol submission to the RSRB.
Grant Support
Grant Support: Sponsored Research Business Center
The administrative and support staff of the Department of Pharmacology and Physiology Sponsored Research Business Center will provide pre- and post-award sponsored research services for basic science research proposals.
Pre-award services include assistance in all aspects of proposal submissions, including, but not limited to the review of proposal guidelines, budget development (including subcontractors), and preparation of proposal forms, sign-off, and coordination of institutional review for paper or electronic submission. Pre-award services also include liaison with ORPA, subcontractors, and sponsoring agencies to facilitate requests for updated information prior to the issuance of an award.
Post-award services include the review of award terms and conditions, account establishment with ORPA and in an encumbrance accounting system, review of personnel and procurement documents, monthly reconciliation of accounts, and preparation of account projections. Post-award services include compliance with institutional and sponsoring agency policies, oversight and liaison with subcontractors, assistance with the submission of scientific technical progress reports, competitive renewals and/or resubmissions, preparation of financial reports, and institutional or agency audit issues.
The Sponsored Research Business Center staff works closely with sponsoring agencies, University central administrative departments and cost centers, and the Department of Anesthesiology faculty, laboratory personnel, and administrative and support staff members.

The Grants Administrator in the Anesthesiology Clinical Research Center supports NIH, industry-sponsored, foundation, and Department-funded projects that are outside the scope of the Sponsored Research Business Center. This includes regulatory management and compliance, pre- and post-award services. Pre-award services include assistance in all aspects of proposal submissions, including, but not limited to the review of proposal guidelines, budget development (including subcontractors), preparation of proposal forms, sign-off, and coordination of institutional review for paper or electronic submission. Pre-award services also include liaison with the Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA), Office of Research Accounting and Costing Standards (ORACS), Clinical Translational Science Institute(CTSI), Center for Health and Technology (CHeT), School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD), Office of Clinical Research (OCR), subcontractors, and sponsoring agencies to facilitate requests for updated information before the issuance of an award. Post-award services include the review of award terms and conditions, account establishment with ORPA and in an encumbrance accounting system, review of personnel and procurement documents, monthly reconciliation of accounts, and preparation of account projections.
