Beat the Winter Blues: Simple Strategies to Stay Energized at Work

Shorter winter days can bring feelings of sadness, low energy, and the “blahs” for many people. These symptoms are often linked to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD). Here are some evidence-based strategies to help lift your mood and maintain energy:

 

  1. Catch the morning sun and take advantage of natural light can boost your mood.
  2. Get moving with 20-minute walks throughout the day to stay energized.
  3. Stick to a consistent bedtime. Your circadian rhythm thrives on predictability.
  4. Skip the comfort foods like: baked goods, pasta, pizza, fries, fried chicken, sugary cereals, pancakes, candy, chips, crackers, and chocolate which can worsen fatigue.
  5. Fuel your body by prioritizing protein, fiber, and hydration to avoid energy crashes.
  6. Work in focused blocks by scheduling breaks to prevent burnout.
  7. Stay social with positive interactions to boost emotional energy.
