Education Mission Statement It is the mission of this division to train fellows who will become clinically competent consultants in the field of Allergy/Immunology and/or Rheumatology, to provide medical residents with the solid foundation in clinical Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology essential to the primary care provider, and to provide medical students with an introduction to clinical Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology. Medical Student Elective The medical student elective provides an excellent foundation in Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology and focuses on the history and physical exam, diagnostic laboratory studies, and diagnosis of the more common diseases in Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology. Teaching venues include the ambulatory clinic, the in-patient hospital, Division conferences, and a self-study course on Blackboard. Medical Resident Elective The resident elective is extensive and includes the unique components of the Allergy/Immunolgy and Rheumatology (AIR) history and physical exam, an understanding of immunologic laboratories that are critical to the diagnosis of common AIR diseases, a better understanding of the presentation of some of these diseases, and diagnostic strategies and treatment modalities found in the diseases unique to AIR. Teaching venues include the ambulatory clinic, the in-patient hospital, division conferences, and a self-study course using Blackboard. Allergy/Immunology and Rheumatology Fellowships The Allergy/Immunology & Rheumatology Division of the Department of Medicine offers excellent two year fellowship training in both Allergy/Immunology (in collaboration with the Pediatric AI Division) and in Adult Rheumatology. Combined three year programs leading to certification in both subspecialties can be arranged on an individualized basis. In addition to outstanding clinical training, the fellowship programs at the University also offer excellent opportunities for extended research training with leading scientists in clinical trials, outcome studies, translational research and bench research in multiple areas including: autoimmunity, germinal center biology, developmental immunology, vaccine biology, HIV infection and aging.
