Mild TBI and Concussion

A concussion is a type of mild traumatic brain injury which is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth in the skull.  This creates chemical changes in the brain along with twisting and stretching of brain fibers. Symptoms are typically most severe right after the injury.  Many concussions resolve quickly.  Post concussion syndrome may be diagnosed when people experience longer lasting symptoms. This is more likely when someone has had multiple concussions.

Concussions are often caused by sports injuries, falls, vehicle accidents, combat injuries, blast injuries, assault and domestic violence and abuse.

Symptoms of a concussion include:

  • Confusion
  • Headache
  • Changes in vision
  • Dizziness
  • Nausea / Vomiting
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Feeling “in a fog”
  • Sensitivity to light or sound
  • Loss of smell or taste
  • Difficulty sleeping
