Diversity and Inclusion

The Department of Neurology ascribes to the values of the University and Medical Center.  To provide strategic vision and leadership, the Department of Neurology has instituted a Diversity Council that meets quarterly to work on initiatives aimed at addressing issues related to diversity and inclusion in the field of Neurology, ensuring equitable treatment of all people, and creating a culture that intentionally includes all voices.

Key Department Initiatives

A culture of mentorship and leadership training.

  • Programs exist to address potential “under-mentoring” of women and those historically underrepresented in Medicine (URiM) through local and national mentorship and leadership programs for residents and faculty.
  • Dr. Colleen Tomcik is a fellow in the AAMC Leadership Education and Development program, and is examining and addressing issues to enhance the recruitment and retention of individuals from diverse backgrounds within our Neurology training programs. 
  • Several of our faculty, including Dr. Robert Holloway (Department Chairman), Dr. Ralph Jozefowicz (Program Director, Adult Neurology Residency Program), and Dr. Nimish Mohile (Associate Chair of Faculty Development) serve as mentors in the AAN Diversity Leadership program.
  • Our residents can partake in several unique global neurology elective opportunities in Europe and Africa during their training, widening their exposure to neurological diseases and neuroscience education in other parts of the world.

An ongoing dialogue regarding inclusion, diversity and equity

Rochester Pride Parade

  • We engage in continuous discussions on implicit bias, microaggressions, bystander interventions, diversity and inclusion in academia.
  • Several members of our faculty, including Dr. Robert Holloway, and Dr. Colleen Tomcik (Associate Director of the Adult Neurology Residency Program), are ally members of the Out & Ally list at URMC.
  • We organize a Neurology contingent to march annually in the Rochester Pride Parade.

Developing a diverse pipeline for Neurology

  • Our faculty mentor women and underrepresented students at each level of their education.
  • Dr. Robert Thompson Stone (Program Director, Child Neurology Residency Program and Third-year Neurology Clerkship Director), as recipient of the University Inclusive Climate Leadership Fellowship, created the UR PreDoc Program, a longitudinal program to promote exposure and interest in academic medicine for high school and college-level students from backgrounds that are historically underrepresented in medicine.
