Clinical Practice Our residents train at Strong Memorial Hospital, Highland Hospital (part of the Strong Health Care System), and Rochester General Hospital. While on each of these assignments, the resident is expected to devote the entirety of their clinical care to the institution at which they are training. Clinical practice includes the following. Residents make rounds Monday through Friday on the patients at their assigned institution prior to beginning the operative day. Residents assigned to a scheduled operative case are expected to interview and examine the patient before surgery. The resident is expected to be didactically prepared for that case. That preparation includes knowledge of the pathophysiology and various methods of treatment, as well as a technical knowledge of how to conduct the procedure. Residents are expected to perform afternoon and evening postoperative checks, as well as rounds on all in-house patients, Monday through Friday. Morning rounds only are performed on hospitalized patients on weekends and holidays. At 5 p.m. on weekdays, a citywide resident call schedule begins for coverage of the emergency departments at each of the three hospitals. On-call residents also are responsible for floor calls from the hospitals. Weekend call coverage begins at 5 a.m. Weekend on-call residents have the same responsibilities of emergency department coverage and floor coverage at the various institutions. Patient rounds on weekends are coordinated between the residents and the on-call attendings at both teaching institutions—Strong and Highland. Residents are free of call and patient care responsibilities either all day Saturday or all day Sunday to provide a weekly 24-hour off period. When seeing a patient in an emergency department who will require surgery in the next several days, residents are expected to notify the covering attending of this patient either that night if the time is reasonable or first thing in the morning following the call night. We encourage and support obtaining advice from any of the teaching faculty at any time of day or night.
