NextCorps

NextCorps is a nonprofit catalyst for entrepreneurship and innovation-based economic development. The organization utilizes business expertise and network connections to aid in the formation and profitable growth of companies in the Rochester area and the Finger Lakes Region of Upstate New York. Services include business incubation, associate membership to allow tenancy and community engagement, acceleration through Luminate, hardware scale up, and facilities for producing early-stage prototypes through FabLab. The University of Rochester is the sole member of the not-for-profit entity. NextCorps’ Board of Directors includes key regional stakeholders.

Excell Partners

Excell is an early investment VC fund that invests in high-tech high-growth startups in New York State focused on Upstate NY. Excell combines generating returns that rank in the top-quartile of its benchmarks, with supporting regional economic development by providing entrepreneurs with hands-on support as well as investment capital. The maximum investment for each round is approximately $1.5 M with a typical investment of $1 M. Excell’s Portfolio includes investments in Medical Devices, Materials, Energy, Biotech, Agtech, Imaging, and IT/Software ventures across New York State with an added. Through the Excelerator, each venture is assigned to one or more of Excell’s Leadership Team or its Venture Advisors with added support from Excell Analysts. Together the venture is monitored for key performance measurements by scheduling on-going work sessions, often weekly and even daily when needed.

Empire Discovery Institute (EDI)

Empire Discovery Institute is a state-funded consortium including University of Rochester, University of Buffalo, and Roswell Park Cancer center. $32 million over 5-years has been allocated by the State of New York to foster drug discovery in the Western New York region. The CEO is Martin Graham, Ph.D., a veteran of the pharmaceuticals industry, including start-ups. The Board of Directors includes senior officers from the three participating institution, including Mark Taubman, CEO and Peter Robinson, COO from URMC. There is also an external Board of Advisors to assist in evaluating potential new technologies for potential development and commercialization.

Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences (CEIS)

State funded support for University of Rochester to collaborate with local industry to develop new technologies. It is a designated New York Center for Advanced Technologies (CAT). A disclosure needs is submitted through UR ventures. The Center for Emerging and Innovative Sciences includes both University of Rochester and Rochester Institute of Technology as members.

Data Science Consortium

Data Science Consortium began as a partnership between Harris Corporation and University of Rochester, with a support from the NY State Empire Development Fund. RIT and multiple local companies are now members of the Consortium. The goal is to foster innovation in data science. Services, including Big Data solutions and Artificial Intelligence capabilities, are provided to researchers and business required advanced digital solutions for data processing.
