Wilmot Oncologists Participate in American Society of Hematology Meeting

Congratulations to all Wilmot Cancer Institute physicians and researchers who were invited to present data at the ASH annual meeting, which took place virtually on Dec. 5 through 8, 2020. ASH is the world’s leader in supporting hematology research and clinical advances for diseases such as leukemia and lymphoma. Here are some highlights.

Dr. Carla Casulo Named to Editorial Board

Carla Casulo, M.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and Assistant Director of Mentoring & Career Development at Wilmot, has been named to the editorial board of Blood, the premier journal in the field of hematology, owned by the American Society of Hematology. She will serve a four-year term starting in January 2021.

Dr. Supriya Mohile Named to Cancer Moonshot Seminar Series

The National Cancer Institute has selected Supriya Mohile, M.D., M.S., Philip and Marilyn Wehrheim Professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, to give a presentation as part of its Cancer Moonshot Seminar Series. The seminar features eight talks, each discussing one of the Blue Ribbon Panel report recommendations. Focusing on minimizing cancer treatment’s debilitating side effects, Mohile’s talk is titled, “Understanding Treatment Tolerability in Older Patients with Advanced Cancer,” and it is scheduled to take place Feb. 25, 2021, from 12 to 1 p.m. Mohile’s talk as well as all talks in the series are free and open to the public. Dr. Jonathan Friedberg Named Editor-in-Chief of JCO

Wilmot Cancer Institute Director Jonathan W. Friedberg, M.D., M.M.Sc., has been appointed as the next editor-in-chief of the Journal of Clinical Oncology (JCO), the high-impact flagship journal of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). His five-year term as JCO editor-in-chief begins in June 2021.

Friedberg, the Samuel E. Durand Professor of Medicine and a clinical investigator focused on lymphoma, has served as a JCO associate editor since 2011.

As editor-in-chief, Friedberg says he plans to further improve the journal’s rapid review process and to further leverage social media as a forum for discussion around articles published in the journal. In addition, he will seek to ensure diversity at all levels of the journal, from editorial board members to published content.

Chunkit Fung Receives Human Rights Leadership Award

Chunkit Fung, M.D., associate professor of Medicine and Public Health Sciences, received the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Leadership Award from Rising Star Gala Leaders at the HRC Equality Convention held on May 1. Fung received his award in recognition of his dedication in leading the HRC Western New York Dinner Committee and for his fundraising efforts.

The HRC Western NY Chapter provides resources and hosts regular local events to support the LGBTQ community in Western NY, including HRC second Thursday network event and Annual Western NY HRC Dinner, a fundraiser that showcases and supports the work of the Human Rights Campaign.

The University of Rochester, including URMC, has been a sponsor for this event for the past three years. Strong Memorial, Highland and Thompson Hospitals have been designated by the HRC as national leaders in LGBTQ healthcare.
