About the Program

Large Group Meetings

These meetings consist of a topic/discussion or panel followed by a problem-based learning (PBL) medical case. During the PBL cases, student split up into small groups and learn from each other and their preceptor about various patient presentations including internal medicine, pediatrics, OB/GYN, surgery, neurology, psychiatry, and emergency medicine.

Topic discussions include:

  • Introduction to the program
  • Making the most of a mentor relationship
  • Panel discussion: Medical students who identify as historically minoritized
  • Panel discussion: Medical sub-specialty physicians
  • Writing workshop: Developing personal statement narratives
  • Discussion with a leader at UR School of Medicine
  • Health Disparities and the Impact of Racism

Senior Mentor Meetings

You will meet at least 2 times per year, with the expectation of:

  • Coaching on professional development
  • Letters of recommendation for summer internships
  • Help with setting up shadowing experiences
  • Help with program final project
  • Opportunity to attend medical student lectures taught by mentor

Junior Mentor Meetings

You will meet at least 2 times per year, with the expectation of:

  • Coaching on applications and professional development
  • Opportunities to tour the medical school and/or attend medical student lectures

Shadowing Experiences

The goal is for all students to have at least 2-3 shadowing experiences per academic year (with 4-6 for the entire program). Typically, students will shadow with their senior mentors 1-2 times, then will have the opportunity to shadow in other fields (e.g., Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Neurology).

Scholarly Project

The goal is for students to complete a final “product” of the program that is oriented towards the field of medicine. This can be a project already completed during the course of their undergraduate work (e.g., during a Summer internship or with an undergraduate research mentor) or could be a small project created specifically for the program (e.g. patient education materials, community education project). At the graduation ceremony for the program, all students will give a brief “platform” presentation to their peers on their project.
