URMC/CEI HIV, Sexual Health and Drug User Health ECHOs

Clinical Education Initiative (CEI), a program supported by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) AIDS Institute (AI), offers exciting "tele mentoring" opportunities to healthcare providers in New York State in the HIV/AIDS, STIs, HCV, and Drug User Health areas. These programs aim to enhance the patients clinical care by offering guidance and support to NYS clinicians.

Since 2016 when CEI has implemented the CEI ECHO™ program, which follows the ECHO™ model, this innovative program offers healthcare providers in NYS regular occasions to engage in discussions about actual patient cases with experts in the fields of HIV/AIDS, Sexual Health (SH), and Drug User Health (DUH). These discussions focus on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment strategies.

CEI has 4 Centers of Excellence and offers 3 ECHO programs:

  • HIV ECHO: scheduled on the 1st Wednesday of every month, 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.

For information contact: Mark.Stratton@mountsinai.org

  • Sexual Health ECHO: scheduled on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, 12:00 -1:00 pm

For Information contact: Jessica_VanScott@URMC.Rochester.edu

  • Drug User Health ECHO: scheduled on the 4th Wednesday of every month, 12:00 - 1:00 pm

For information contact: Lauren.Walker3@mountsinai.org

How does it work?

The ECHO™ program establishes a connection between specialists based at an academic "hub" and clinicians situated in local practice settings via monthly teleconferences facilitated through Zoom, a video conferencing technology. Through these teleconferences, a collaborative learning community is formed, enabling participants to receive mentoring and valuable feedback from the specialists.

During these sessions, real patient cases are discussed, ensuring that patient confidentiality is maintained through de-identification and compliance with HIPAA regulations. The training sessions are further enriched with a didactic segment, providing participants with structured educational content, that is recorded and made available on https://ceitraining.org/

CEI ECHO™ sessions are specifically designed for medical providers, including MD/DO, NP, PA, DDS, PharmD, and RN. However, CEI also extends a warm welcome to all healthcare providers in NYS who wish to participate. In order to foster an environment of active engagement and meaningful interaction, the number of available spots is limited. This ensures a high level of participation and facilitates an enriching learning experience for all attendees.
