Alissa Huston Presents at the 21st Annual Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology

Alissa Huston, MD, associate professor of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology and co-medical director of the Pluta Integrative Oncology & Wellness Center, presented at the 21st Annual Conference of the Society for Integrative Oncology. Huston’s oral presentation was titled, “Establishing an Integrative Oncology Service: Barriers and Opportunities.”

URMC Welcomes Susan Dent as Leader of Cardio-Oncology and Survivorship Programs

Susan Dent, MD, has joined the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology. In addition to her role as a medical oncologist, she will serve as director of the Cardio-Oncology Program and the Judy DiMarzo Cancer Survivorship Program at Wilmot Cancer Institute. Dent specializes in treating breast cancer and has spent her career studying the toxicity of breast cancer treatment, particularly the ways cancer treatment can impact cardiovascular health. Most recently, she served as a faculty member at Duke Cancer Institute and prior to that, she spent many years at the University of Ottawa, in Canada, where she co-led the first cardio-oncology clinic in Canada and founded the Canadian Cardiac Oncology Network.

Team Led by Erika Ramsdale Receives URMFG Healthcare Innovation Award

Erika Ramsdale, MD, MS, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, leads a team that received a URMFG Healthcare Innovation Award from the UR Medicine Quality Institute for a project titled, “Empowering Patients with a Portable and Interoperable Health Data Wallet for Rectal Cancer Surveillance.” The awardee receives $100,000 over a two-year period.

Allison Magnuson Named Fellow of American Society of Clinical Oncology

Allison Magnuson, DO, MS, associate professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and a breast cancer and geriatric oncology specialist, was named a fellow of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). She will be honored by ASCO during the annual meeting next June. The award is given to honor ASCO members for their volunteer service, engagement, and dedication to ASCO.

Brea Lipe Earns Communicator Award of Excellence from Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts

Brea Lipe, MD, professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology and clinical director of the Multiple Myeloma program at Wilmot, has received a Communicator Award of Excellence from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts for an article she wrote titled “Checking Boxes” that was published by the American Society of Hematology Clinical News. Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Recognizes Aram Hezel with HERO Award

Aram Hezel, MD, chief of the Division of Hematology/Oncology and the John and Ethel Heselden Professor, received the HERO Award from Cancer Support Community at Gilda’s Club Rochester during their annual Heroes Ball. The award is given to a local individual who has demonstrated meritorious, outstanding, or heroic distinctive personal involvement in the cancer arena.

Kah Poh Loh Receives a 40 Under 40 in Cancer Award from Amplity Health

Kah Poh (Melissa) Loh, MBBCh, BAO, MS, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, received a 40 Under 40 in Cancer award, given during a reception at the ASCO meeting. The award is given by Amplity Health, Swim Across America, the National Community Oncology Dispensing Association, Inc., and the Association for Value-Based Cancer Care. It goes to emerging leaders in the cancer field.

Carla Casulo Named a Woman of Distinction by the Rochester Business Journal

Carla Casulo, MD, associate professor of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, received a Woman of Excellence Award from the Rochester Business Journal. She was one of 57 women from the Rochester area honored during a ceremony in May 2024. She received the recognition for her impact on patient care as well as training of future oncologists. In addition to her experience at URMC, Casulo serves as chair of Global Women in Lymphoma Organization. The group aims to encourage young women in the lymphoma field to step up and into leadership roles.

“Dr. Casulo is a world-class educator and mentor,” Ruth O’Regan, MD, associate director of Education and Mentoring at Wilmot and chair of the Department of Medicine at URMC. “She is immensely respected as a thoughtful and attentive teacher on rounds with clinical trainees.”

Alissa Huston, MD, associate professor of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, and co-medical director of the Pluta Integrative Oncology and Wellness Center at Wilmot, gave a talk to the International Waldenstrom’s Macroglobulinemia Foundation titled, “Optimizing Quality of Life with Integrative Oncology.” It was part of their 2024 Educational Forum.

Danielle Wallace Earns Wilmot Physician-Scientist Fellowship Award

Danielle Wallace, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Medicine, Hematology/Oncology, has received a Wilmot Cancer Institute Physician-Scientist Fellowship. Her project is titled, “ctDNA-Guided Mosunetuzumab Consolidation in Older Patients with DLBCL Following Pola-R-mini-CHP.” Her mentors are Paul Barr, MD, and Carla Casulo, MD.

Baumgart Named Fellowship Director for Hematology/Oncology

Megan Baumgart, MD, was appointed to Fellowship Director for the division of Hematology/Oncology, effective April 1, 2024. She joined URMC faculty in 2014, and has spent the last decade devoted to patient care, research, and education, earning recognition along the way for her contributions.

She received an Annual Award for Outstanding Oncology Research. In 2019, she led the Early Career Women Faculty Leadership Development Seminar. 

Baumgart's compassionate approach to patient care, coupled with her consistent efforts to organizational enhancement, sets her apart as an understanding caregiver and a leader in her field. Her involvement in mentoring programs, coupled with her significant role in shaping educational curricula as associate director, underscores her unwavering support for fostering the growth of future generations of medical professionals. Her active engagement in clinical research reflects her determination to enhancing the field.

“I have the greatest admiration for Megan as a scholar, clinician, and educator,” said Aram Hezel, MD, division chief of Hematology/Oncology. “It is her commitment and dedication to her patients and to progress through research that makes her such an effective teacher, and perfect example for our trainees. I'm grateful for Megan's contributions over the last decade to our division and cancer center and look forward to seeing the fellowship continue to flourish under her direction.”

Baumgart graduated from Albany Medical College in 2007, and completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Rhode Island Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Medical Oncology at Yale New Haven Hospital.

The division thanks Carla Casulo, MD, for five years of leadership. Casulo is assistant director of Cancer Research Training and Education at the Wilmot Cancer Institute.
