Care After Cancer: 10-Year Anniversary

April 25, 2019

Each year over 140,000 young people are diagnosed with cancer. Treatments for cancer are more successful than ever, and have led to substantial improvements in cure rates and quality of life for survivors. Unfortunately, the very treatments that are so successful in eliminating cancer have devastating effects on fertility, often taking away a survivor’s ability to become a parent.

The exciting news, however, is that fertility preservation options are now increasingly available to newly diagnosed cancer patients prior to initiating chemotherapy, radiation, or surgery. While freezing sperm in young men faced with cancer has been available for decades, new technology now allows for harvesting and freezing eggs and/or embryos in young women. Banked eggs and embryos can then be successfully thawed for future use once a patient overcomes their disease and is ready to start a family.

Procedures for fertility preservation can be prohibitively expensive and are not usually covered by insurance. The cost of such treatments is often the primary barrier to a patient’s ability to pursue fertility preservation. The Strong Fertility Center, part of the University of Rochester Medical Center, a not for profit institution, has offset much of the cost to patients through our Childbearing After Recovery (C.A.R.E) program. Over the past 10 years, we have been able to provide fertility preservation procedures to several young women with cancer, giving them continued hope for a better future after cancer survival.

We are excited to announce this year’s fundraising event for C.A.R.E will be held on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at Oak Hill Country Club.
