School of Medicine & Dentistry MD Program Receives Full Accreditation from National Committee
The medical student education program at the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry (SMD) earned full accreditation for the next 8 years from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). Sponsored by the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) and the American Medical Association (AMA), the LCME determines whether medical education programs meet established quality standards and continually strive to improve in areas such as educational resources and infrastructure, curriculum management, evaluation and enhancement, and student support. Accreditation qualifies an institution for relevant federal grants and programs and ensures graduates are eligible for licensing exams required to practice medicine in the U.S.

New Art Space in Neurology Embraces Diversity and Equity
The Department of Neurology has opened the doors on a new art gallery that will feature diverse artistic voices. Under the stewardship of noted Rochester artist Shawn Dunwoody, the Unity Gallery will leverage art to provoke thought, encourage dialogue, and celebrate the voices, minds, and faces that shape the community and medicine.

The Unity Gallery is in Department of Neurology’s Joynt Corridor located in 5.4300 in Strong Memorial Hospital and is open to visitors from 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays. The works can also be viewed virtually on the Unity Gallery website.

Tom Golisano makes $50 million commitment to the University of Rochester to build the new Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Institute
The University of Rochester announced today that entrepreneur, philanthropist, and civic leader B. Thomas “Tom” Golisano has made a historic $50 million commitment, making it possible to build the Golisano Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center. The new world-class transdisciplinary center will provide solutions to the health and quality of life issues that affect people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Those with IDD are a traditionally underserved population, with approximately 19,000 people affected locally, 120,000 regionally, and 200 million worldwide.

What The Streets Teach
Classes teach medicine, but Street Outreach helps teach how to connect with patients in ways that most students would never expect. It asks student volunteers to have hope for people who have sometimes lost all hope themselves, mirroring how society tends to view them. At times, these volunteers are trying to support people who have nobody else left who believes in them.

If the future of medicine depends on more equitable health care, participants in this program would say that learning on the streets of Rochester is helping to prepare them for that future.
