Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, hospitals nationwide have experienced an increase in workplace violence. The pandemic placed significant stress on the entire health care system, and unfortunately, in some situations, patients, visitors and family members can be involved in violent incidents, jeopardizing our workforce’s ability to provide care. Moreover, a rise in violence nationwide has led to fear of local impacts.  “We have long worked to ensure that we are prepared for any potentially violent incidents, including active shooters, and we have intensified our efforts in correlation with recent events across the U.S.”  said Joe Coon, Manager of Security and Safety.

The University of Rochester Aging Institute announced that both Strong Memorial and Highland hospitals have been certified as Age-Friendly Health System (AFHS) participants, part of a nationwide movement to improve health care for older adults.
