After a pause in 2020 and 2021, the Beat the Blah Golden Spatula Contest was back! This year, participating teams were asked to use their creativity and artistic flair to decorate a cookie cake that represented their department or an important part of Highland, such as the ICARE values.

One of the highlights of Beat the Blahs was Pet Therapy Day. Service dogs Echo and Chloe visited units and departments throughout the hospital and POB. Staff reactions ranged from surprise, to excitement to joyful tears.

The theme of Beat the Blahs 2022 was “Reclaiming the Highland Spirit. Supporting Each Other.” Together, these seven words help summarize the past two years until today. The impact of the pandemic will be long lasting on so much that touches our lives, including our roles in health care. While we’ve felt a spectrum of emotions through the course of the pandemic, the embers of the Highland spirit continued to glow.

How a New Twist to the an Old Fashioned Comfort Food Made a Difference

Since he joined Highland about five years ago, Assistant Operations Manager Brian Binggeli more has overseen a staff of about 70, monitored kitchen inventory, ordered products from vendors, and managed Highland’s retail food services, which include the Highland CafĂ©, the Grand Grounds Coffee House, and the Deli. Adding the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic, Brian has had a full plate, no pun intended.
