A Man of Many Hats

Fall 2012

Ask biologist and influenza researcher David J. Topham, Ph.D., what he does at the University of Rochester Medical Center and you could get a long answer. His newest hat is as director of the Respiratory Pathogens Research Center (RPRC) that NIAID views as a resource to do research on respiratory infections, targeting most other fungal, bacterial and viral pathogens, but excluding mycobacterium tuberculosis.

“It surpasses anything we’ve ever done in ambition and complexity,” Topham said. “I’m called the director but I’m only a ringleader. This is the work of many people. We had to have a very substance infrastructure to do the studies they want us to do. I can’t take credit for winning the award. We’re relying on expertise in Rochester, which is substantial.”

Pioneer in Infectious Disease Research Leaves World-Wide Legacy

December 13, 2012

Caroline “Caren” Breese Hall, M.D., an internationally recognized expert in pediatric infectious diseases, died at home on December 10, 2012, at age 73. A professor in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC), Dr. Hall’s contributions and her devotion to science, clinical care, and teaching helped improve the lives of children, trainees, and colleagues.

Dr. Hall was known throughout the world for her work studying viral diseases in children. Her research focused on virology, especially respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), human herpes viruses 6 and 7, and vaccines, which resulted in more than 500 published articles. Read more...

Interview: David Topham

September 25, 2012

As the Director of the Health Sciences Center for Computational Innovation, David Topham, Ph.D. discusses the essential link between health sciences research centers at the University of Rochester Medical Center and the Center for Integrated Research Computing (CIRC).

Research centers such as the RPRC are now able to generate very large sets of data, so powerful computational resources are necessary to not only store the data but also to provide the tools and hardware to analyze the data. The CIRC connects the machines generating this data to the storage servers and to the supercomputers that are able to process and analyze the information on a much greater scale than previously possible.
